What a month September is in Australia, with spring comes footy finals, school holidays and swooping magpies. As a Pies supporter it’s not the best end to the month for me, but in saying that, it has been a great year and the positive side is we got to witness one of the greatest Grand Finals ever (just lacking the end result!). Congrats to those in the west (a few ex-colleagues in Perth will be celebrating all this week I’m sure).
On the recruitment front September proved to be another busy month especially in coal with new projects gearing up and further contract extensions for key players; which has seen an increase in core maintenance and production roles coupled with growth in technical engineering positions. SEEK figures continue to point to mining and resources having the greatest jobs growth for the 13th consecutive month. Western Australia is also seeing a spike in job advertising which is encouraging for the sector and state. In addition I attended a lunch this week which was focused on recruitment trends in the mining industry and around 60% of the attendees all agreed the industry will be in a better state 12 months from now which further highlights the positivity in the sector.
Key take away’s continue to be strategic resource planning and talent pooling. This seems to be an ongoing topic of conversation amongst key employers coupled with forming valued partnerships to ensure the best chance of securing key talent as the industry moves along in a positive manner.
For now the run into the end of the year remains buoyant with plenty of activity across the mining and construction sectors which will see ongoing demand for talent and create opportunities for candidates. Bring on 2019 for exciting challenges on the recruitment front and another crack at the Premiership!!
